A multiple-effect evaporator is a combination of multiple sets of evaporator stages or effect, the core principle is utilizing the secondary steam generated by the evaporation in the previous effect as the heat source for the next effect to achieve the purpose of saving energy.
During the evaporation process, a large amount of secondary steam is generated, containing significant latent heat, which should be recovered and utilized. The secondary steam is fed into the heating chamber of the subsequent effect evaporator. As long as the operating pressure and boiling point of the solution in the subsequent effect are lower than those in the current effect, the fed-in secondary steam can still function as a heating source. This cascading effect of reusing steam across multiple stages or effects ensures a magnified efficiency in heat utilization, leading to significant energy savings and reduced operating costs.
The multiple-effect evaporator consists of multiple evaporator stages or “effects”, a condenser, vacuum system and auxiliary equipments, operating in a series to form the four-effect system, with each stage designed to progressively utilize the residual energy from the preceding one. The entire evaporation system adopts a continuous input and output production method, achieving continuous operation.
And multi-effect evaporators can adopt various forms such as forced circulation, natural circulation, falling film, rising film, plate evaporators, etc., and can also use various combinations to optimize the process.
In general, a single-effect evaporator requires 1.1~1.2 tons of steam per ton of water evaporated, a double-effect evaporator requires 0.6~0.7 tons of steam per ton of water evaporated, a triple-effect evaporator requires 0.37~0.46 tons of steam, four-effect evaporator requires 0.3~0.35 tons of steam, and five-effect evaporator requires 0.24~0.3 tons of steam.
Due to the limitations of pressure difference and temperature difference in practical operation, five effects is maximum.
